All of us know that vitamins are absolutely essential for good health. But very few of us take the necessary intake of vitamins per day. This is because we do not have the time to eat three meals per day. Besides vitamins, we also need protein, fats, fiber, calcium and carbohydrates. There is also a minimum intake requirement for each of the above. Women must consume at least 1200-1500 mg of calcium everyday. While calcium supplements supply about 30-50%, food stuffs like milk, cheese, yoghurt and ice-cream will take care of the rest. Vitamin D which is essential for bone health can be supplied through skin by the sunlight but cannot be obtained in cold climatic conditions or when elderly people do not leave indoors. Here vitamin supplements will take care of the requirement.

One can always calculate the vitamin and mineral intake based on the information given on the package. Or you can use the Internet for information on vitamins. Or better still, consult a nutritionist or naturopathic physician and follow their instructions. Whatever you do, just don’t forget the vitamins.
