4 Natural Remedies for Oily Skin and Acne

Healthy skin is essential for keeping acne at bay, but some sufferers have unfortunate genes that make it difficult to treat. Accutane is one of the most popular prescription drugs for acne and does work well in some people, but others may benefit from other treatments. Some of the more effective home remedies for acne include different washing methods, pillow cases, food allergies, and nutritional supplements.

One theory is that washing the face with soap daily can dry out the skin and actually lead to excessive oil production. Hence, avoiding soap and other cleansers on the face may paradoxically actually help reduce facial oil and acne. Many have had success with this method. Try just using warm water on your face, gently drying with a towel afterward.

It may seem like an old wives tail, but cutting chocolate out of the diet may also be effective for some people. Food allergies may be one cause of acne in some people. Other foods that may involve allergies are wheat and dairy. This remedy is generally not effective for everyone, but it is worth trying.

Another method that has gained popularity recently is a daily changing of your pillow case. Oil can build up in the case and in the pillow itself, and ultimately lead to too much oil build up in the skin. Some acne sufferers have had success with this method where stronger remedies like prescription drugs have failed them.

Some dietary supplements may also help improve skin health and reduce acne. Fish oil contains omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential for good skin health and are largely absent in many modern diets. Other benefits of fish oil also include cardiovascular health and an anti-cancer effect. Vitamin A is well known as a supplemental remedy for acne, and in fact Accutane, the most popular prescription drug for acne, is made from it. Toxic effects can result from too much vitamin A, however, so keep dosages below safe levels.

Everyone is different, and what works well for one won’t make a dent in the acne of another. The only thing you can do is try different methods to see what works best for you.
