4 Tips For Dining Out Before You Leave Home

Wouldn’t it be great if all restaurants had a cheat cheat revealing the fat and calories for each item on their menu?  Although some restaurants have started to do exactly that its the exception and not the norm.  What you eat matters so why not do a little pre-planning to help you be successful?  Most of the time you’ll have to wing it but you will be ahead of most people who dine out if you will follow these four tips:

Tip # 1 – Plan Ahead – You probably have restaurants that you dine at frequently so why not pick up one of their takeout menus?  Many restaurants also have menus online that you can download at no charge.  This is a good idea to see if they have a low fat menu section.  Either way this will help you plan your mean before you leave home and you won’t end up some dining place and not be prepared.  Preparation beforehand helps you to order wisely.

Tip # 2 – Do Your Homework Prior To Going On Vacation – Just as you plan your meals locally you’ll want to develop a strategy for when you travel or go on vacation.  Don’t hesitate to call the restaurant manager or concierge and ask them to fax you a menu.  Look through pamphlets of the hotels where you’ll lodging to see if they have any healthy eating choices.

Tip # 3 – Select coffee shops rather than restaurants for business meetings.  Whenever possible choose to meet your client for coffee or tea rather that a restaurant.  Many times people question or look at you with scowled eyebrows when you make different food choices.  To avoid the conflict altogether just opt for a more laid back meeting place.

Tip #4 – Eat a healthy snack before you leave home.  Try having a small piece of fruit, some nuts or raw vegetables to help curb your appetite.  I don’t know how many times I’ve made unhealthy food choices because my stomach was growling.  This way you’ll order just the right foods and in the right amount.
