Truck driving is perhaps one of the most under appreciated jobs in the United States as it involves countless hours moving goods across the country and often time’s drivers are not considerate of the trucks limited ability to maneuver in congested freeway areas. These same people are the ones who complain when the product they ordered arrived a few hours late. These truck drivers face serious odds as they can be on the road for days with rest only coming on the side of the road or at local truck stops. Lack of sleep is not only a hazard to the driver but to everyone else on the road as well. People who have sleep disorders cause problems all over the country and not just for themselves, they put at risk anyone else on the road. Many trucking companies are making national efforts to identify and correct sleeping disorders.
Sleep apnea is another common problem among professionals who tour the country for a living. This happens with the weight of the chest is compressed on the lung partially blocking airway, and when the airway is blocked it will cause either snoring, or heavy strain on the lungs themselves. This undue strain can eventually lead to suffocation and or death.
Insomnia is another common sleep issue with drivers and it prevents them from maintaining normal sleep hours. Insomnia is usually started when your sleep schedule is adjusted or when your experiencing heavy amounts of stress in your life. There are other causes of insomnia as well and only a medical professional can properly diagnose the issue, but there are ways to help yourself out with seeing a doctor. Trying to get on a consistent sleeping schedule should be the first step and making sure your bedding is comfortable is next. Perhaps switching from a flat bed to an adjustable beds will help you get more sleep. Insomnia is a gateway disorder that can lead to other problems like depression anxiety and of course fatigue.
Restless leg syndrome or RSL is an increasingly more common disorder that interrupts an individual’s ability to relax their body enough to fall asleep. They feel as though they cannot stop their body movement and are consistently shifting around. RSL is a new disorder that has only recently been something doctors diagnose and treat with medication.
