Do Pregnant Women have Discharge?

Pregnancy is probably one of the most significant stages in a woman’s life. Although not all women are able to experience this process of making new life, pregnancy is still one of the few things that set women apart from men. However, going through pregnancy is not an easy task to do. Aside from becoming susceptible to all kinds of health risk not just for the mother, but as well as for the child, being pregnant also entails a lot of changes and side effects in the body of the woman. This only proves that bearing a child is not all the time a happy moment. Women do undergo a lot of suffering, pain and changes in her body physically. Nevertheless, many women are still unaware whether having discharges during pregnancy is completely normal. So the question now is; do pregnant women have discharge?

Just like what is mentioned above, pregnancy does bring a lot of changes in a woman’s life. We all know that having vaginal discharges is completely normal for women since most of them do experience menstruation starting from their adolescent years up to their early and middle adulthood. However, when a woman becomes pregnant, menstruation also stops in order to give way for the growth of the fetus. This makes some women believe that discharges are completely gone once pregnancy sets in. Nevertheless, some pregnant females may have also experienced seeing yellowish or whitish discharges during the course of pregnancy. This makes most women alarmed and worried since seeing discharges in this stage is said to be unusual. So is it really abnormal to have this kind of discharge when a woman is already pregnant? The answer to this question is NO.

When a woman is pregnant, her body tends to experience a lot of changes specifically in her hormones and as well as in her blood circulation. This produces small discharges in the vaginal area which is otherwise known as leukorrhea. However, this watery and whitish discharge is said to be harmless at all. This is in fact one of the ways of the body in flushing out the bacteria in order to keep the mother and the baby healthy and away from any infections. This discharge; however, must not be offensive in odor and should not have any color aside from the one mentioned above. Although this discharge is considered normal, it can still make women feel uncomfortable. This is the reason why regular changing of underwear and constant use panty liners is advised in order to make women feel dry. It is however not advisable to douche or use tampons for this situation since this can increase the risk of infections.

Aside from leucorrhea, any other type of discharge that is not similar to the one mentioned earlier is already something that is considered irregular or abnormal. Vaginal discharges that are thin with clear leaky flow can indicate premature rupture of membranes. Malodorous and itching discharges may show signs of infection while bleeding or blood stained discharges may indicate fetal problems or complications. Once these things are observed, it is a must that immediate attention from the doctor is sought.
