Some of us do it for the social cause while some do it just because it has become a fad. What ever may be the reason, what matters is that gradually there is a decent amount of awareness among us about giving blood to save life. It is one of the most useful deeds for the society and many individuals realize the importance of give blood. The blood we bestow today will come back to us at the time of our need. But before we set out to give blood for the needy we must comprehend a few things concerning it.

A person having a general good health is eligible to offer his blood for the needy. But the donor must be between age 17 and 60 to be able to donate. It is also essential that the person must at least be 110 pounds with a pulse rate of 80 to 100 beats per minute and normal.  His or her body temperature must not exceed 99.5 degrees, and the blood pressure should also be between the normal ranges of 160/90 to 110/60. The skin of the donor around the puncture place should be free from any kind of lesion or scar of needle prick which indicate drug addiction or frequently giving blood.

The donors who are giving whole blood can do so every 56 days, and the plasma donors can donate twice in a week with the gap of at least 48 hours. The frequency of platelet donors is different though, they can donate for about 24 times in a year. These frequency guidelines should be kept in mind, because the blood bank would not accept your blood if you do not adhere to these rules.

You must not donate blood if you tested positive for HIV. In case you have injected yourself with un-prescribed drugs or any other substance then you must restrain from donating blood. If you have hemophilia or any other blood clotting disorder you must not give blood.  This way you can save a lot of individuals from contracting the deadly disease and contribute to the society in your own way. Always remember caution is better than cure. Do not take any of the blood bank instructions lightly, and follow the rules to continue to create a society which is free from evil and pain. Even one unit of your blood saves at least 4 lives, if it is used properly.
