Ever heard of a supplement called 5-HTP?

Have you ever heard of a supplement called 5-HTP?

5-HTP is thought to help the body in making serotonin, a very import neurotransmitter within the brain that control many functions including sleep cycles, dreams, memory, mood, eating habits and a whole host of other functions within the body. In short serotonin is one of the most important compounds the body makes in order to function properly.  Its no surprise then that when someone is experiencing low levels of this component all manner of regulatory processes we may take for granted can break down and cause problems.

5-HTP is produced in the body from another compound called tryptophan, which is obtained through food rich in protein.  However tryptophan isn’t found in large quantities in the food we eat, if someone has low levels of serotonin and is looking to boost their levels a 5 HTP supplement can help.

5-HTP supplements mainly come in capsule form but can also be in tablet form.  Often 5-HTP isn’t alone in the supplement with many companies choosing to complement 5-HTP with Vitamin B6.  Along with the standard health benefits associated with this vitamin it also helps any unused excess 5-HTP to be metabolized and excreted.

Supplement makers use 5-HTP derived from the seeds of the Griffonia Simplicifolia plant, a completely natural source.  It is the intermediate step between tryptophan this very important brain chemical serotonin.

Low levels of 5 HTP within the body can cause one or more of the following symptoms;

* Depression
* Anxiety
* Obesity
* Carbohydrate craving
* Fibromyalgia
* Bulimia
* Insomnia
* Narcolepsy
* Sleep apnea
* Migraine headaches
* Tension headaches
* Chronic daily headaches
* Premenstrual syndrome

5 HTP has been available in the US for over 15 years but has been available in Europe and many other places for much longer, as such it has a proven safety record.  5-HTP often comes in capsules but sometimes also in tablet form.  It is available in all good pharmacies and health food stores.
