How Many Calories are Burned Walking a Mile?

Whenever we do exercise, one of the main reasons why we do it is to lose some of our excess weight. As we all know, losing weight naturally is only done through regular exercise and proper diet. Some of the most common exercises that we do are the simple walking, running or jogging in the morning. These activities may be simple for some of us, but these exercises can actually help in burning all the unused calories in our body. So if some of us are wondering how many calories are burned walking a mile; then it’s best for us to read on.

First of all, let us try to identify the differences between walking and running. Running is actually considered a type of walk; however, this includes fast pacing with larger steps. Because of this, running is considered to burn more fats that walking. However, both walking and running can still give us the same benefits for our health as well as in improving our cardio and endurance. So how much calorie do we burn while walking a distance that is about a mile long? The answer to this question actually varies depending on several factors. In doing an exercise or a routine, the calories burned are always not always the same on every situation. Walking on a smooth and even road can burn lesser calories compared to walking on a rough and rugged terrain. Even though the distance is the same (1 mile), the setting or the area where the exercise is done will also affect the amount of calories burned. In addition to this the speed of walking can also affect the rate of burning calories since the faster we walk, the more calories we are actually burning. In other words, the more rigorous or physically demanding the activity we are about to do, the more burning calories we can also expect.

However, if we were to estimate the number of calories we burn by walking a mile, then it will probably range from 80 to 120 calories, with an average of 100 calories. As we can see, walking can definitely help us lose some of our weight. Nevertheless, we must also include the factors that can affect the rate of burning all the fats in our body (a pound of fat is equal to 3500 calories). So in case we are planning to lose some weight, then we should always consider our age, our present weight, our degree of fitness, our body composition and as well as the area or the location where we are walking (flat, rugged or inclined). These factors in addition to the speed and the distance of our walking can greatly affect our rate in burning all the excess calories in the body. Nevertheless, walking is still a great way to start a new life especially for those who are overweight and obese. So what are we waiting for? Are we all ready? Are we all set? If yes, then GO for that walk!
