When we hear the word “oil”, we usually think of it as something that can cause problems with our health. This is due to the fact that oil contains fats that can cause the increase of cholesterol in our body, which opens the doors for many types of illnesses and diseases. However, not all oils are actually bad for the health. Some oils are also considered beneficial for our body functioning, just like the wonderful fish oil. What is fish oil and how much fish oil should you take a day?
Fish oil is considered a medical miracle by many if they are taken in high doses. This fish oil is unlike any other animal oils in the market. This is due to the fact that fish oil contains an important substance for our body called the Omega 3 fats. This substance basically helps in a lot of health problems such as reducing inflammation, improving blood flow and circulation and as well as enhancing brain functioning. Unfortunately, Omega-3 is something that we can’t get near enough to what our body needs just with our daily diet. This is the reason why fish oil pills and gel capsules are made in order to help provide or supplement the daily requirements of the body. But how much fish oil is required for our use?
Basically, our body requires at least 1000 mg of Omega-3 in a day. This means that the amount of fish oil we need basically depends on the amount of Omega-3 it has. Fish oil capsules vary in composition. This is the reason why we must know first exactly what the composition of each fish oil capsule, before we can decide as to how much we will need every day. Most fish oil pills bought in groceries contains low amounts of Omega-3 and high in fish fat. These pills usually have a ratio of 30% Omega-3 and 70% fish fat. If this is the case then, we will need at least 12 capsules a day in order to cover the daily requirement of Omega-3 in reducing cholesterol or triglycerides. On the other hand “triple strength” fish oil contains higher Omega-3 concentrations that are about 60% and 40% fish fat. This only requires us to have at least 5 to 6 pills in a day. However, Lovaza or Pharmaceutical Grade fish oil contains higher doses that can reach approximately over 85% Omega-3. If this is the case, then 3 to 4 pill per day is already enough.
The amount of fish oil that we need to take in a day also depends on the current condition that we have. If we are fit and healthy, then 500 mg to 1000 mg of fish oil is already acceptable. However, if we are trying to address specific health conditions in our body then we will need a higher dose of Omega-3. For depression, 1000 mg/day is required as well as for heart disease and skin disorders. For those with problems in blood pressure, 2000 mg is ideal as well as for those with arthritis, asthma and diabetes. High triglycerides in the body require higher doses, which falls to at least 3000 mg in a day. These are just some of the important facts that we can take note in order to know how much fish oil is required for us to take in a day.
