Fighting Yellow Teeth Caused by Aging: How to whiten yellow teeth

Being a senior citizen and retired can be amazing at times.  You’re freed from the daily stress of life and can do many of the different things that you had planned and dreamed of doing your entire life.  It can also be difficult at times as you deal with the aging process as well.  One of the more visible symptoms of aging is a yellowing of teeth.  This can be particularly frustrating because trying to figure out how to whiten yellow teeth will lead you down dead ends that won’t work because of the nature of the problem.

As you age, your teeth will yellow and there is not too much that can be done about it physically.  The main reason for this is because the hard, outer surface of your teeth, also known as enamel, thins and exposes the inside parts of your teeth, known as the dentin.  Enamel, when it is unstained, is the bright, white color that we all want to see in our teeth.  Dentin, on the other hand is closer to a yellow color.  When your white enamel thins, it exposes more and more of the yellow dentin that is below it, making your teeth yellower and yellower.

Because this type of teeth yellowing is not caused by discoloration, you can’t use many of the more traditional teeth whitening methods used today.  Natural teeth whitener, at home whitening kits, and even professional teeth whitening will most likely not have much of an effect.  Luckily, there is one way that you can whiten your teeth.

If your teeth are yellow due to age, you can whiten them by having veneers placed on the surface of your teeth.  Veneers are very thin layers of material that are placed over the surface of your teeth both to protect it and keep it white.  Installing veneers can give you a brighter smile that you had thought possible even when you were 20!
