Severe Insomnia

Insomnia is a medical disorder defined as the feeling of not getting enough sleep whether through the inability to fall asleep at night or stay asleep through the entire night. Insomnia is one of the most common sleeping disorders that affects millions of Americans. If you think you suffer from insomnia, it’s best to talk to your doctor and discuss a change of lifestyle or sleeping habits or possibly medicinal aid to sleep better.

There are several known causes for insomnia that range from the quality of your sleeping area to the effects other psychogenic disorders. Some of these causes can be altered to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. For example, if you live in an environment where there’s a lot of noise and light around you could try to find a place more conducive to sleeping without these distractions. This will help you fall asleep easier and more comfortably allowing for a better night’s sleep. There is a strong link between depression and/or anxiety disorders and insomnia. If you suffer from these conditions, it’s best to talk to your doctor about how to treat both conditions most effectively.

The symptoms of insomnia are seen outside of just the bedroom around bedtime. It can affect your daily life. Lack of sleep as we all know tends to make people irritable and unable to focus. If your insomnia is a chronic condition, there can be a long term effect on your memory and ability to focus. This is why insomnia is such a serious condition that does need to be discussed with your doctor and should not be written off as just a bad night’s sleep.

While changing your sleeping habits often proves to be the best treatment of insomnia, there are other options available in the form of sleeping pills. Sleeping pills can be habit forming and have dangerous side effects so it’s best to consult your physician and fully understand the risks before you decide if that’s the right route for you. They are often not recommended for those suffering from severe insomnia because of their addictiveness. For acute insomniacs, they will help you get to sleep and stay asleep and can be crucial when you find yourself unable to fall asleep.
