Although strep throat could invade anyone, this kind of infection is common among young children, especially toddlers. Fortunately, curing strep throat in toddlers is quite easy since this condition is known to be short-lived. Aside from this, treating strep throat is also not hard as long as we know the different symptoms that point us to this type of infection. To help us accomplish these, here are some of the signs of strep throat in toddlers.

In general, toddlers are usually uncomfortable and restless whenever they are sick or ill. This is also very evident whenever they are suffering from strep throat. This is the reason why one of the signs of this infection among this age group is none other than irritability. This can be exhibited whenever the child refuses to eat or doesn’t finish his or her meal. Toddlers can also show signs of pain by constantly putting their hands or fingers near their throat.

Another common symptom of strep throat is the presence of red and swollen tonsils. In case we have observed signs of irritability and problems with eating food, then we must assess immediately their throats for any signs of redness or inflammation. One of the major indications of this throat infection is the exhibition of red tonsils with patches or streaks of white spots. These patches are considered as the build-up of bacteria commonly known as Streptococcus, hence the name strep throat.

Aside from the presence of irritability and inflamed throat, fever is also commonly developed. Fever is actually not a disease or an illness; rather it is a mechanism of the body in order to fight off an infection. Once fever occurs, this is a good sign that the body or the system is being corrupted by a bacterium or a virus. Fever, in combination with the signs mentioned above, is the best lead towards strep throat. However, there are also mild cases of this infection wherein swollen throats are not accompanied with fever.

In addition to these major signs and symptoms, toddlers may also show signs of upset stomach, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, lethargy and fatigue. However, not all these symptoms are expected to show in all cases of strep throat. Nevertheless, these are still good indications for signs of strep infection in children. Once we can observe these symptoms in toddlers, we should immediately take them to the doctor in order for the right intervention and management to be handed. Usually doctors will prescribe antipyretic medication for the fever as well as an antibiotic treatment in order to ward of the causative bacterium.
