Sleep Aids For Better Living

Sleeping difficulties happen to just about everyone some time during their life.  This can have a profound effect on the lives of certain people, causing problems for their health, mood and relationships.  Options exist to help you achieve better sleep.  Newer drugs promise more freedom from side effects combined with better quality of sleep.  Why not try natural herbal remedies and supplements before resorting to potentially addictive medications?

The uses for tea are varied and sleep is no exception.  Enjoying a cup of tea is a good way to unwind for the day.  A well known tea for sleep is Valerian root tea.  It has been used since the time of the Greeks and Romans.  It contains GABA, the body’s inhibitory messenger, which works to slow down activity in the brain.  Chamomile tea is another very popular tea that has a nice soothing flavor.  The sleep inducing benefits are just the beginning.  It is also helpful for irritable bowel syndrome, sour stomach and for mild constipation.

Our strongest sense, the sense of smell works well for sleep.  Aromatherapy can trigger a memory of your warm bed or a favorite childhood place. By creating a positive association it will put your mind at ease and you will slowly drift off.  Lavender oil is a good choice.  It is often used in lotions and bath products.  By using a couple drops of English lavender oil on your bedtime clothes or on the pillow can start sleep off right.

The hormone of sleep is melatonin. The levels of melatonin peak at night and are tied to the amount of light you receive.   It is also a key ingredient in special herbal sleep formulas like Melatrol.  Using melatonin can help restore the body’s reserves and achieve a normal sleep schedule and rhythm.

These are just a handful of ways to get back to more consistent sleep.  Try one and see how it works for you, chances are you can find something that is beneficial.
