Sprained Wrist: Treatment and Diagnosis

De wrist forms the joint between the hand and the lower arm. A sprained wrist is accident prone because of falling, accidents, pushing or hitting someone. When you have a sprained wrist you will notice this because of a swelling of the entire wrist.

A sprain is caused by stretching or tearing a band/ligament that keeps the bone structures on its place. The severity of the sprain highly depends on the severity of the trauma or accident. Common symptoms area pain, sensitivity of the traumatized area and loss of function of the wrist joint. Sprains are very common, giving support to the joint and resting are the best treatments for a full and fast recovery. When the sprain is severe, the doctor might decide for a plaster coated bandage. A surgery is not likely and is very rare.

Bruised or sprained? The terms are often used interchangeably, but they do not actually exactly the same. The term bruising is damage of the subcutaneous tissue that resulted from the sudden blow. The bruise causes swelling, pain and a a bruised spot. Wrenching or spraining is mostly interchangeably with bruising. Spraining is caused by cracks in the wristbands.

Symptoms of a sprained wrist

When you sprained your wrist this will hurt quite a lot for a few minutes. You can not instantly give support with the wrist and it will swell quite rapidly. Withing a few hours the swelling will further increase and the wrist will turn blue. After 2 weeks the severe symptoms are mostly gone and than you are able to use your hand/wrist again.

Treatment

What do you do when you sprained your wrist? Do you need to go to a doctor? When you sprained your wrist, the first treatment would be cooling. You should do this prefereably immediately after the sprain. You can use water, but it is better to put some ice in a bag and wrap them in a towel. Further treatments differs from resting and relaxing to doing exercises and prevent stiffness.

The best way is to give your wrist some rest but vary it with doing some exercises. When you are doing the exercises you have to make sure that it will not hurt. You can stretch the wrist until it feels uncomfortable. A sprained wrist is never a serious injury, but it has an increased chance that you will sprain it again. It will stay a weak spot for quite some time before it will completely heal.
