What are the Symptoms of Mild Autism?

Recently there seems to be an outburst of children diagnosed with PDD-NOS, autism and Apserger. Not so long ago nobody knew what autism was and most people did not heard about it but now almost 3% of all children in the US is diagnosed with a form of autism. Knowing what the symptoms of mild autism (PDD-NOS) and autism are is important because treatment and education is necessary for the individual to lead a normal life.

Children with a mild form of autism often have an average IQ and sometimes even a little higher than average. It is easy to say they are not retarded in any way. However they have some awkwardness that causes them to not function properly in a society with other people. The main symptom of mild autism is that they live in their own world and don’t like to be disturbed. They also fail to recognize emotions in other people. In short, they miss empathy, placing yourself in others to know how they feel or think. This is a very important function and lacking it makes it very hard communicating with other people.

Often these children are teased by their peers because they are different and act different. Their motor skills often lack development and this makes them clumsy. Although they often want to make new friends, they don’t have the skills in doing this. They are not able to start a conversation or how to sustain one.

The fact that they are not able to recognize emotions does not work in their favor. They don’t understand when someone is making jokes or cynical remarks. They also do not understand when someone is crying or laughing. The fact they don’t understand jokes is because they are not able to understand figural speech.

Another symptom of mild autism is an unnatural affection for a a certain toy. Although they are not well able to show affection to their parents and loved ones, they are sometimes obsessed with a certain toy. When they play with their toys they will forget the world around them. They also will not leave the house without this toy.

They also tend to have a daily routine, a schedule of activities that has to be the same everyday. If there is a change in the routine, the individual can have outbursts of violent screaming or humming. It is especially this behavior that is very hard to cope with for parents.
