What are the Symptoms of Tonsillitis in Teenagers?

What is tonsillitis? Tonsillitis is described as the condition wherein our tonsils become infected, which exhibits pain and inflammation. Our tonsils are specifically located on either side of the back of the throat. Although everyone is at risk of having this kind or type of illness, tonsillitis is known to be common among adolescents. In fact, one out of ten people have already encountered this type of inflammation more than once in their lives. This makes us become more interested in knowing the different symptoms of tonsillitis in teenagers in order to have easy recognition and fast intervention to be implemented.

Before tackling the different symptoms of this body abnormality, we must first be aware of the causes of such illness. This condition is in fact caused usually by viral infection. Nevertheless, we still cannot exclude infections caused by bacteria. Just like what is mentioned above, tonsillitis is common among young children, although this can still occur to anyone no matter what the age is. Most of us would usually thing that tonsils are just plain tissues at the back of the throat; however, these portions are actually considered to be made of lymphoid tissues that are capable of producing immunoglobulins, which are responsible in fighting of infection. However, removing our tonsils through surgery is considered to be harmless since this does not cause any serious damage or risk in to our health. This is due to the fact that there are other lymphoid tissues located all over the body that can take over the role of the tonsils.

What are the common symptoms of tonsillitis in teenagers? If truth be told, there isn’t much difference in terms of the symptoms being exhibited by tonsillitis in all ages. Most of these symptoms are common in all people (young and old) suffering from this type of condition. Some of the most common effects of having tonsillitis include sore throat and the loss of voice, swollen and red tonsils, high grade fever, white patches on the tonsils otherwise known as pus, dysphagia or difficulty in swallowing and as well as inflamed lymph nodes. Other could also experience symptoms such as bad breath, hoarseness of voice, cough and nasal congestions, runny nose, pain in the throat area, stiff neck, headaches, body aches and even chills.

Since most tonsillitis is caused by viral infection, antibiotics are considered to be ineffective. This is because viral infections usually just disappear on its own after how many days. This is why supportive treatment such as taking in drugs to treat symptoms such as fever, cough and colds is considered to be ideal. Pain reliever included in Paracetamol can also help in the recovery fast. However, some techniques or steps are also considered useful in hastening the recovery from this condition. This includes drinking plenty of water, avoiding smoke or smoking and eating foods that are soft and easy to swallow. These are just some of the known symptoms about tonsillitis in teenagers.
