The Causes and Treatment of Dry Skin

The genetic makeup of a person determines the composition of the skin.  Consequently, there are  people with normal, oily, and dry skin.  On average, most have a combination of the three.  As we age however, the skin becomes drier and has less elasticity.  Therefore hydration is very important in keeping it supple.  Those with a drier compositions have to work a little harder at maintaining moisture to avoid problems down the road.

The cause of dry skin can be genetic or from lack of moisture and natural oils.  Because the body is made up of about 70% water, it must be replenished frequently to maintain balance in the cells.  Drinking about 6 glasses a day is recommended for maintenance.  It is also important to limit exposure to the sun.  In addition, the application of dry skin moisturizing cleansers and lotions to this delicate external organ minimizes future problems.

Years of neglect will eventually result in problems such as cracked heels and feet.  This is the most common area of neglect.  After a bath or shower with a mild cleanser, steps should be taken to limit the loss of hydration.  Those simple steps are:

A.  Pat the skin dry with a soft towel or allow it to dry naturally before dressing.
B.  Apply a lotion with emollient and vitamin rich ingredients such as vitamins A & E
C.  Choose a moisturizer with sunscreen for the face

In winter it is good to wear flannel and thick socks to seal in moisture after a soothing bath.  It is also a good idea to shower every other day and alternate with a bird bath at the sink unless sweat from a work out or hard day’s labor requires one.

For extreme cases, there are several products on the market with petroleum and other rich ingredients.  People who suffer from eczema and psoriasis may require visits to the dermatologist to alleviate symptoms.   Following a healthy regimen will result in a healthy look for many years to come.
