Heroin addiction is ugly and damaging to all those who come in touch with it. It is one of the most dangerous drugs around, and a leading cause of death amongst drug users. Heroin use is actually on the increase in the US, to where it is now almost at epidemic levels. Heroin addicts come from all walks of life, and they are aged anywhere from a young teen to people in their sixties.
One in every ten suicides in the US alone is caused in some way by heroin abuse. Even though the dangers of heroin use are well documented, thousands of people still use it on a regular basis. There are many reasons why people allow themselves to become addicted to heroin, with one of the main reasons being the euphoric rush that users get, especially when they mainline the drug. Heroin is very addictive, thus people are soon forced to continue using it in order to avoid heroin withdrawal symptoms.
Not everyone injects heroin directly into their veins. It is also possible to snort it and to smoke it. Injecting is one of the main ways people take it into their body, because it gives the most results. To smoke heroin, users place a small amount on a spoon and then light a flame under the spoon. The flame heats up the heroin and releases fumes, which are then inhaled.
Heroin addiction is skyrocketing and rehab centers are finding it difficult to cope with the number of people choosing to come for treatment. If you know someone who is addicted to heroin, do all you can to try to encourage them to go into rehab as otherwise their life is very much in danger. Of course, rehabilitation from a heroin addiction is not very pleasant, but if admitted to a center there will be sufficient staff there to help see them through the initial stages, which are the worst.
Once the initial heroin detox process has been completed, and the patient is free from any withdrawal symptoms, they will be placed into an inpatient program. While in this program, they will have one on one counseling as well as group therapy sessions. The longer they are able to benefit from this, the higher the likelihood that they will stay off heroin.
