The brain is a very complex organ. Up until now, it’s not fully explored and understood. The diseases the affects the brain, particularly neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and Huntington’s disease, can’t still be cured because their causes aren’t fully understood as well. Another disorder that the brain normally takes is memory loss. Memory loss has been associated with aging and early memory loss are sometimes be hastened with different risk factors. To keep the brain in its tip-top shape, the following tips will be a lot helpful especially for the middle-aged and above.

DIET

Omega-3 fatty acid is an essential acid which means it’s vital in the overall body development, particularly the brain, but it cannot be produced by the body from scratch. It will have to be consumed from foods like cold water fishes, dark green leafy vegetables and legumes. Cold water fish includes tuna, salmon, herring and sardines. Broccoli, spinach, seaweed and Brussels sprout for vegetables and walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts, almonds and pecans for legumes. All these food groups are known to be rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3’s DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) are the building blocks of the brain. They are vital in the early development of the brain that’s why they can be found in breast milk of nursing mothers. Eating foods rich in Omega-3 DHA and EPA will help in protecting the brain from disorders. Studies even show Omega-3 can help in preventing early onset Alzheimer’s. Omega-3 promotes good blood circulation and has an antioxidant property that protects the brain from free radical damage.

Drinking of at least a glass of red wine a day also promotes good blood circulation to the brain to enhance the thinking process.

SMOKE/LIQUOR/DRUG FREE

Studies show that excessive smoking affects the brain’s cognitive (thinking) process not to mention greatly increases the risk of lung cancer. Excessive drinking is another risk factor why the brain doesn’t function well. This is evident when drunken people don’t respond to questions well or display violent behaviors. Use of illegal drugs like cocaine, heroin and “meth” (methamphetamine) eventually dries out the brain that can ultimately lead to death.

BRAIN REST & EXERCISE

Getting enough sleep and worrying less takes off the stress to the brain. Reading, answering crossword puzzles, basically using the brain stretches it just like “walking” is for the heart.

SUPPLEMENTS

There are numerous supplements out there but only a few to trust. Omega-3 dietary supplements manufactured by Alaska Deep Sea Fish Oil and Nordic Naturals are just a few of the trustworthy companies in the world today. They provide safe and potent doses of Omega-3 fatty acids in their products for the whole family.

Regular consumption of these dietary supplements along with a well-balanced diet, clean living and exercise will lead to well functioning brain and a longer life span.
