Plastic surgeons often comment that one of most common cosmetic complaints is cellulite. It is not only an extremely common issue with 90 percent of women being affected by it at some point but it can also be very unsightly and damaging to a woman’s self esteem. The condition is caused by uneven pockets of fat underneath the skin and fibrous tissue which pulls down on the skin above.
The anti-cellulite industry is growing, with millions of dollar a year spent on treatments to solve the condition. One of the best ways to reduce cellulite is to use an anti-cellulite cream. However, such creams can be expensive and successful treatment requires you to apply the cream into the affected areas twice a day. As you can imagine, these creams aren’t for everyone – especially when you consider their price.
An often recommended alternative treatment is diet and exercise. However, an exercise program needs to specifically focus on cellulite removal. Thankfully, this only requires a few minor adjustments from a normal weight loss program. More specifically, it needs to focus on reducing fat while increasing the levels of lean muscle in the areas that are affected by the cellulite condition.
The increase in lean muscle is an important but often overlooked factor. Increasing muscle will stretch and therefore smooth the skin and muscle, and make the problems areas look smoother and leaner.
Therefore, your exercise program will need to have a balance of fat burning cardio and muscle building strength training. The cardio exercise should not just lift your heart rate – they should also work the muscle in the areas that you are most concerned about. You can’t choose which areas that fat is lost from but you can help to increase the muscle mass under the areas that have the cellulite.
Just doing cardio exercises isn’t enough to produce sufficient levels of lean muscle mass. You will need compliment them with strength training exercises that target your problem areas. Squats and lunges are fantastic if you have cellulite on your thighs and buttocks.
