What are the Side Effects of taking Too Much Omega 3?

Too little and too much in everything is bad. Moderation is the key. Same goes with omega 3 fatty acids. Taking omega 3 fatty acids in a form of dietary supplement can bring numerous healthful benefits to the body but abusing it can be very harmful. What are the side effects of taking too much omega 3?

Omega 3 fatty acids can be obtained by simply taking in fish oil. Fish oils are obtained from the tissues of oily fish. Sardines and herring are good sources of omega 3 and including these fish in your weekly diet can give you the same benefits as taking in fish oil.

What is Omega 3 Good for?

Omega 3 fatty acids are good for the heart because they are unsaturated. They tend to lower down blood cholesterol and triglycerides level. They also lower one’s risk of acquiring breast, colon and prostate cancer. There are studies that state that omega 3 can relieve clinical depression and anxiety.

According to the American Heart Association, people with cardiovascular problems should consume at least two fish a week and those without cardiovascular problems can take in 1 gram of omega 3 fatty acids a day. Those with high level of triglycerides can take in up to 4 grams a day but with medical supervision. Those who are taking 3 grams of omega 3 a day should fist consult a physician in order to prevent side effects.

What are the Side effects of Taking Too much Omega 3?

Going above the daily recommended dose of omega 3 is not possible by simply eating fish. Those who need a higher dose of omega 3 can achieve this by taking in supplements. Those who take in excessive omega 3 without medical supervision are at risk of bleeding because omega 3 has the capability to thin the blood. If the blood is thin, clotting capability of the blood is decreased thus if the person has a wound, it would take time for it to stop bleeding. Too much blood loss can cause hypovolemia and if not prevented could shut down the whole body system.

Be Careful if….

Those with congestive heart failure should be very careful in taking in omega 3 fatty acids. Studies have shown that those with this condition, the heart can barely pump blood out well and omega 3 has been found to decrease cells the number of pumping cells in the heart thus increasing the risk of cardiac death.

In order to prevent omega 3 side effects, the best thing to do is to consult a physician before buying and taking anything. With this, excessive intake of omega 3 can be prevented.

    Too much omega-3 can lead to nausea, diarrhea, and indigestion. And according to some researchers, it can also lead to serious illnesses like cancer. So, better to monitor it. Because it really dangerous to one’s health that I’m sure you don’t want to happen to you.
