What causes nightmares?

What causes nightmares and where do they come from?  Nightmares disturb our sleep. Even after a nightmare we are scared to fall back to sleep again. Why do we have anxious dreams and what can we do about it? Nightmares give away our deepest fears. The monsters and other terrifying figures that often appear in these dreams, are common in all cultures in the world. The word nightmare comes from the Celtic horse goddess Rhiannon. It was certainly a nightmarish figure, because she was accused of eaten her son  Pryderie.

Physical Causes

Bad dreams may have physical causes. If the body experiences stress, for instance due to a high temperature, this can cause hallucinations during sleep. Nightmares may also cause sleepwalking, because the adrenaline flow is increased. This causes a reaction of “fight or flight in the sleeper.

Nightmares and Children

Nightmares are frequently seen  in children, because children often struggle with powerful emotions such as anger outbursts. At night, these intense feelings are expressed in dreams. Children often have problems struggling with nightmares because they are not able to distinguish the difference between what is real and what is not. This also affects their view of the world and can cause internal conflicts. If these fears are not removed, they can lead later in life to very confusing thoughts. At any given time or event when you remember those old feelings, you will relive this nightmare. A nightmare means you have fears you have to face.

What Causes Nightmares

A nightmare is an expression of great sorrow that could have a psychological or emotional cause. Psychological disorders or major fears which are bothering you might lead to an anxious dream. Nightmares that have psychological causes, most often appear at the beginning of your dream.

Hormonal Causes

In women, hormonal fluctuations often cause panic during sleep. This causes heart palpitations, sweating and feelings of suffocation. Hormonal changes upset the balance in the body, which can lead to anxious dreams. The sleeper is usually awake during a nightmare in an attempt to escape this horror night.

Unresolved Emotions

Some psychologists believe that people who have nightmares do not fully understand physical events in their daily life. For example, teenagers can not explain why they often have violent sexual dreams. Recurring nightmares are often caused by unresolved emotional issues that are deeply rooted in the spirit of the sleeper. A dream that repeats itself wants to draw attention to a certain something.

There are several things what causes nightmares. Most of the time they will eventually go away without doing everything. When you have frequently nightmares it is maybe time to take action and see how you can resolve the issues.
