What is the Omega-3 Recommended Daily Intake?

Omega 3 is a common substance that is mostly found in fish and krill oil. This fatty acid is considered a very healthy component that can produce a number or benefits for our body. When it comes to Omega 3 consumption, we should be aware of the right amount of DHA and FDA in our diet. These types of omega 3 fatty acids are essential components in our daily intake. However, studies with regards to DHA are considered to be more plentiful that that of EPA. So what is the omega-3 recommended daily intake?

Many health experts suggest that at least 160 mg of DHA in the body is needed by healthy and normal adult individuals. Nevertheless, the value of this varies depending on the age and current health status of the individual. This means that children, infants and pregnant women do require a different dose of that of an adult. This can also depend on the label of the brand of supplements we are taking. This is the reason why it is important for us to always consult the label for suggestions with regards to the right intake or daily dose.

As for pregnant, nursing or lactating mothers, studies have affirmed that at least 300mg per day of DHA is required. This is reviewed and confirmed by the different tests that were led by the National Institute of Health and the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids. Children on the other hand are recommended to have 220 mg of DHA per day. This can also be used as a basis of an adult’s daily intake. As for infants, many workshops and organizations about child health have suggested the inclusion of DHA in infant formula. However, there is still no specific amount or value cited as to how much is being incorporated. Nevertheless, formula manufacturers make use of their discretion and decide for their own as to how much DHA level is added to infant formulas. This however is usually base on the amount of DHA found in breast milk and in connection to this; studies have already shown that at least 3.4 mg of DHA is found in every gram of mother’s natural milk.

Why is it important for us to have omega 3 in our daily intake? Omega 3 is an important part of our diet since it can do a lot of health benefits such as improving heart function, decrease arrhythmias, which can cause heart failures, reduce triglyceride levels, decrease growth rate of atherosclerotic plaques and lower down the blood pressure. These are just some of the facts pertaining to the right amount of omega 3 and the various advantages it could bring to our health.
